Power and Water Production Capacity Is Increased By Dubai's DEWA

As part of its fourth quarter 2023 financial results, Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) provided updates on its ongoing projects and future estimates.

By year's end, significant progress was made in the water, power, and other areas, according to the Dubai-listed DEWA.

With regard to power developments, the 250 MW Hatta hydro station had an 82.5 percent completion rate, and the Phase 4 Al Aweer station, which has a capacity of 829 MW, was 94.5 percent complete.

With new reservoirs being built, DEWA's water storage capacity has increased to 911 million imperial gallons (MIG).

Among these were the soon-to-be-completed Hassyan Reservoir, Hatta Reservoir, and Nakhali Reservoir – Phase 2.

Along with adding substations, DEWA expanded its fiber optic cable network by 364 km to a total of 3,998 km. These additions included 14 new 132kV and 3 new 33kV substations.

The analysis also showed that, with 2.6 GW coming from clean energy sources, the peak power consumption in 2023 would reach 10.4 GW, a 9 percent rise from 2022.

In a similar vein, the demand for desalinated water increased by 4.91 percent per day to 434 million gallons per day (MIG), while the total desalination capacity was 495 million MIGD.

With 5.3GW coming from renewable energy, DEWA hopes to have a total installed generation capacity of 20GW by 2030.

Seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) technology is expected to play a major role in the planned 735MIGD installed desalination capacity.
